My child likes the class a lot. First, the book list is attractive. Usually, kids at this age wouldn’t think of reading the classic books and parents might also think that they are too advanced (or boring) for them. However, the teacher prepared my child very well and he actually enjoys reading these books. Ms. Jen is very knowledgeable about the books and their writers, especially the writing techniques. She explains the background of the books and the writers’ life so that the kids can better understand the books and why the writers wrote in certain ways. – from a current student’s parent  (5/6th Grade)

“The class environment is active and warm. Ms. Jen is very kind and patient. She encourages the kids to communicate their thoughts about the books, sometimes even negative feelings. She didn’t try to sugarcoat but explain in detail why it’s like that in the book.

My child really enjoys reading the books and discussing them with Ms. Jen and his classmates. Overall, the class is very informative and also enjoyable. I can’t believe that my 9-year-old finishes reading “Animal Farm” and talking with me about his observations and thoughts.  – from a current parent (5/6th grade)

“The class engaged my son to this classic reading class. I can’t imagine that he likes reading Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice,” and other classics “To Kill the Mockingbird,” and “Great Expectations.” The approach of the class made it a lot of fun for students to learn, that is the best part of it. His sister would also like to join next semester. Thank you Oakton Academy. ” – from a parent of 6th grader (2019 spring)

“The final presentation is fantastic. I would give it a A++ class for younger kids’ reading. They learned in a fun way, in an enriched way, and the kids started to like reading…I would recommend it to any other students.” – from a parent of 6th grader who has taken the class since 5th grade.

Comments from former parents and students:

“I learned real professional writing strategy from this class.”

Our neighbor’s child is in Nysmith school, and he said they are reading “Animal Farm” at 5th Grade. We are very happy to get the classic reading books from Oakton Academy, which we do not get it from our base school.”

“My son hardly likes any reading and writing class, but after his first trial class, he said he wanted to come back. I am glad this interesting and creative reading class attracts him.”
